1982 BMW R 100

First of all I didn't find this particular BMW...it found me! I got an email from the local BMW dealership regarding this bike. A local gentleman had won this 1982 BMW R100 on a raffle in Hamburg, New York. The new owner loved the bike but was really more into long distance riding and the Cafe build was a bit uncomfortable for that task. The owner of the dealership knew that I liked Cafe bikes and he put the two of us in contact. The bike was really nice but the current owner was having trouble with the oversize Dellorto carburetors. One, they were running too rich and two, one of them had fallen off! There were a few other minor issues but otherwise the bike was put together really well. We worked out a deal for the bike which included me finding a nice stock BMW R75/5 for him to replace this cafe bike. I found a nice stock /5 for him and was soon addressing the carburetor problems. The basic problem was that the 40 phm Dellorto carburetors were never used on a BMW. The R90S used 38 phm and there was a special rubber manifold elbow that connected those to the BMW head but that was too small for this particular application. After some research I found some Ducati rubber manifolds that I thought would work. I found these at an on line retailer called Bevel Heaven. The owner there was really helpful and knew all things Ducati. The BMW flange on the head was 52mm and the Dellorto carb flange was 46mm. The rubber manifold sleeve I found at Bevel Heaven fit 38/41 PHM Dellortos. I soaked the rubber flange in boiling water and was able to slip the rubber sleeve over the BMW head flange. Some light weight POD filters capped off the carburetor set up. Another issue was the seat did not fit quite right. I took it off and re-fit the adjustable front mounts and it fit perfect! The last issue was to adjust the Tarozzi rear sets for perfect shifting!.
